Los Angeles News Helicopter Crash Triggers Broadcasters' Safety Review
On 19 September the Los Angeles Times reported that local broadcasters in Los Angeles began a safety review after the fatal NBC4 helicopter crash in Chatsworth on 15 September. The crash occurred while the aircraft was covering a separate bus collision that had already claimed two lives. BBC said three people were killed and another injured. NBC News identified the victims as journalist Eliana Moreno, pilot George Marciniw and pedestrian Edy Gutierrez Mejia.
CNN confirmed the identities and noted the helicopter went down in a commercial parking lot. The Guardian observed the incident revived discussion of the long history and risks of aerial news reporting. Federal investigators said audio and video captured during the final live broadcast could provide key clues, according to the Los Angeles Times.
