Florida Health Department Confirms 22 Vibrio Cases and Four Deaths
The Florida Department of Health confirmed on 17 September that 22 people had been infected with the waterborne bacterium Vibrio vulnificus and four had died, the highest death toll recorded in the state for 2026. The department had earlier reported the same figures on 10 September, noting that the fourth fatality involved a Broward County resident aged between 75 and 79 who contracted the infection after consuming raw oysters. Officials also said that neighboring Gulf states, including Louisiana and Texas, were seeing rising numbers of Vibrio cases.
