Trump signs expanded sanctions bill targeting Russian energy and defense
President Donald J. Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, a bipartisan law that authorizes up to 100% tariffs on the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas and expands sanctions on Russian officials, banks, energy and defense sectors, with a 30-day deadline for implementation.
The legislation cleared Congress after the House passed the bill with a 262-159 vote, granting the president tariff authority and targeting Russian entities, and the Senate later approved the measure despite objections from some allies. Earlier House debates highlighted Democratic concerns that the tariff powers could raise consumer prices, while most Republicans supported the effort to pressure Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
