Apple M5 Ultra outperforms AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX in Geekbench 7 multi-core tests

Résumé

Apple's M5 Ultra chip achieved a 10.8% higher multi-core score than AMD's 96-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX in Geekbench 7, while using fewer cores.

Apple's M5 Ultra system-on-chip, the company's most powerful workstation processor to date, recorded higher scores than AMD's Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX in the Geekbench 7 benchmark suite. The M5 Ultra, which integrates 36 CPU cores—including 12 high-performance cores—posted a multi-core score 10.8% above the 96-core, 192-thread Threadripper, despite using less than half the number of cores.

In single-core testing, the M5 Ultra led by 46.4%, achieving a score of 3,774 compared with the Threadripper's 2,578. The benchmark also showed the M5 Ultra ahead in workloads such as Photo Editor, HDR, and Photo Library, which benefit from Apple’s unified memory architecture. However, the Threadripper retained advantages in certain highly parallel tasks; it outperformed the M5 Ultra in Ray Tracer and Clang tests, where its larger core count provided up to a 58.8% lead.

The comparison noted that the M5 Ultra is typically housed in compact Mac Studio enclosures, whereas the Threadripper requires larger chassis and robust cooling solutions. In overclocking experiments, the Threadripper reached a stable 5.80 GHz across all cores using liquid nitrogen cooling, drawing approximately 1,000 W of power.
