CDC says Texas, Florida top US brain-amoeba cases; NC water feature linked to teen death

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Texas and Florida have the most documented Naegleria fowleri infections in the United States, with a total of 180 cases recorded from 1937 through 2025. State health officials in North Carolina traced the likely source of a recent fatal brain-amoeba infection to a man-made water feature at the El Futuro mental-health center in Durham County.

The 17-year-old teen died after exposure to the water feature, which has been closed pending further testing. Earlier reports had linked a similar infection of a 13-year-old to the same facility.
