California health officials and universities probe pediatric cancer cluster in Ladera Ranch
California state health officials and researchers from California State University, Fullerton and the University of Southern California launched an investigation and began environmental testing in Ladera Ranch on 20 September, after six local children were diagnosed with the rare bone cancer Ewing sarcoma. The effort follows earlier sampling of parks in the community that began on 13 September, when scientists from the same universities started testing soil and water for possible contaminants linked to the cluster.
