Fed officials weigh further hikes as Treasury yields surge
Federal Reserve officials in Washington said on 24 September that rising Treasury yields and still-elevated inflation are prompting the central bank to consider additional rate hikes. The discussion follows the Fed’s 15 September decision to lift its benchmark rate by a quarter point to a target range of 3. 75-4 percent, the first increase since 2023, under new Chair Kevin Warsh.
The move, anticipated by markets that priced a 92 percent chance of a hike and saw the 10-year yield near 5 percent, was described by Warsh as removing a “dose of accommodation. ” Subsequent comments from officials such as Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, Fed Governor Michael Barr and Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin highlighted that inflation remains high across the economy, supporting the possibility of further tightening.
