CDC Confirms First 2026 Measles Death as Pennsylvania Outbreak Claims Four Lives
The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed on September 23 that a measles-related death had occurred in 2026, marking the first such fatality recorded nationwide, as the disease continued to spread in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania health officials had earlier reported four deaths linked to the outbreak, including two unvaccinated adults, two infants and an 18-year-old who suffered a rare neurological complication, bringing the state’s case count to 792, the largest U.
S. outbreak of the year. Governor Josh Shapiro and Secretary of Health Debra L. Bogen urged the CDC to publicly acknowledge the deaths and to provide emergency assistance, warning that the state would withdraw its Epi-Aid request if the agency did not update its measles dashboard.
