70-Year-Old Hiker Rescued After Week-Long Search on Isle Royale
Isle Royale officials said the 70-year-old hiker was located by kayakers and airlifted by the Coast Guard on 12 September, after a week-long search that involved the National Park Service, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and state police. The rescue was detailed in a statement released on 14 September.
Earlier reports from Upper Michigan's Source and other outlets said backpackers had found the missing hiker, identified as Craig Berg, on 12 September after he vanished on 5 September. Those reports described him as injured and suffering from hypothermia before being evacuated to a hospital, and highlighted the multi-agency coordination that led to his safe recovery.
