EU offers Canada associate membership amid U.S. tariff pressure
European leaders announced on 18 September that the European Union would grant Canada an associate membership status, a step taken in response to recent U. S. tariff measures and Ottawa’s push to broaden its trade links. Earlier, EU governments had backed a plan to deepen cooperation with Canada in technology, trade and raw materials, Politico.

European officials later discussed proposals covering critical minerals, digital trade, education and Arctic security ahead of a summit, and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen publicly suggested the associate-member concept. Justin Trudeau welcomed the proposal, emphasizing defence, critical minerals and energy security, while President Donald Trump criticised the move. Trudeau also noted that EU treaties do not currently provide for associate membership, and Ireland’s finance minister Simon Harris said the deeper ties would not weaken the transatlantic relationship with the United States.
