Man arrested after killing Sacramento woman following restraining order violation
A 22-year-old Indian national who had been released from immigration detention shot a Sacramento woman outside a bakery and later died by suicide after a police standoff.
A 22-year-old Indian national shot and killed 38-year-old Shalini Thakur outside a Panera Bread in Sacramento on Tuesday, then died by self-inflicted gunshot after a brief standoff with police about two miles away. The suspect, identified as Rohit Rohit, had been detained by U.S. immigration officials in August 2023 after crossing the Arizona border but was released a month later under an order of recognizance. Court records and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office indicate that Rohit had been stalking Thakur for months, including placing a tracking device on her vehicle, copying her house key, and repeatedly threatening her. He also allegedly damaged her car tires and followed her before the fatal shooting. Police responded to the scene and later engaged the suspect before he took his own life.
"He threatened to kill her and himself on multiple occasions," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
The incident has prompted renewed discussion about immigration detention policies and restraining order enforcement in the region.
