Malibu officials close Lechuza Beach after sinkhole damages coastal road
Malibu officials closed the only public entry points to Lechuza Beach on September 11 after a sinkhole opened on East Sea Level Drive, leaving the secluded shoreline inaccessible. The sinkhole, about 30 by 30 feet, appeared in the driveway of a Malibu oceanfront residence believed to belong to actor Nicolas Cage following heavy rains and waves linked to Hurricane Marie. City officials declared a local emergency, evacuated 31 homes, temporarily shut off natural-gas service, and said the collapse was tied to coastal erosion caused by recent storms.
