Mathematicians Challenge OpenAI's Navier-Stokes Claim and AI Research Practices
On September 12, Cornell professor Steven Strogatz warned that recent AI breakthroughs are accelerating mathematical research but also raising concerns about credit, relevance and the future role of human mathematicians. The warning follows a series of controversies that began on September 10 when OpenAI announced that its AI system had produced a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem, a claim disputed by mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge, who said the company had used knowledge of their parallel work.
The announcement prompted criticism over data use and research practices, and led OpenAI to withdraw its sponsorship of Caltech’s AI-focused math hackathon after a letter from mathematicians warned the event could harm the research community. In addition, a letter signed by 25 Fields Medalists expressed concerns that AI research methods could undermine attribution, peer review and open collaboration in mathematics.
