North Korea commissions second Choe Hyon destroyer amid joint drills
On 7 September, Kim Jong Un inaugurated the Kang Kon warship in Wonsan, saying it would strengthen Pyongyang's naval deterrent, as the United States, South Korea and Japan began a five-day joint exercise in nearby waters. The ship had been formally commissioned on 6 September, after the vessel capsized during its 2025 launch, an incident the leader described as a “criminal act,” according to CNN. The ceremony was attended by Kim’s teenage daughter, as reported by AP, and marked the entry of the second 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class destroyer into service.
