The film "Elsinore" dramatizes the final year of British actor Ian Charleson, focusing on his performance as Hamlet and his battle with AIDS, with Andrew Scott in the lead role.

London-based director Simon Stone’s new drama "Elsinore" follows the last twelve months of Ian Charleson’s life, the Scottish actor best known for his role in Chariots of Fire. The story centers on Charleson’s return to the National Theatre to play Hamlet, a production that became both his artistic pinnacle and a personal test as he copes with an AIDS diagnosis.

Andrew Scott portrays Charleson with a blend of determination and vulnerability, while Olivia Colman appears as Dr. Margaret Johnson, a pioneering HIV specialist who urges the actor to monitor his health. The supporting cast includes Billie Piper as casting director Patsy Pollock and Johnny Flynn as director Richard Eyre.

“It’s about being alive and becoming dead,” the director character says about the Shakespearean play.

The screenplay by Stephen Beresford draws on the close-knit theatre community of the late 1980s, depicting backstage camaraderie, the emergence of AIDS-focused activist groups, and the pressures faced by gay actors of the era. Scenes show Charleson’s friends confronting the spread of the disease, his visits to the clinic, and his determination to keep his illness hidden from the production team.

Historical figures such as director Derek Jarman appear, urging Charleson to speak publicly about his condition to combat stigma. The film also references real-life theatre moments, including Charleson’s replacement of Daniel Day-Lewis as Hamlet after Day-Lewis left the production.

Critics note that while the direction sometimes leans on melodramatic cues and the score by Stefan Gregory is prominently featured, the performances—particularly Scott’s—provide a compelling portrait of an artist confronting mortality.

"Elsinore" aims to illuminate a pivotal period in queer and theatrical history, offering both a tribute to Charleson’s legacy and a broader reflection on the impact of the AIDS crisis on the performing arts.
