Patriots lock up cornerback Christian Gonzalez with record $135 million extension
New England signed cornerback Christian Gonzalez to a four-year, $135 million contract, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
New England Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez have agreed to a four-year extension worth $135 million, including $102 million in guarantees, according to sources. The deal, finalized less than 48 hours before the Patriots’ season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, makes Gonzalez the league’s highest-paid cornerback, surpassing the previous record set by Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon.
Gonzalez, the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 draft and a former All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection, was eligible for his first extension this offseason. He missed part of training camp with a lower-leg injury but returned to practice before traveling to Seattle for the opening game. Contract negotiations had been ongoing for months, with the player expressing frustration earlier in August.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft previously indicated the team was prepared to offer a deal that would set a new salary benchmark for the position. Head coach Mike Vrabel and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said they were eager to retain Gonzalez and had discussed expanding his leadership role within the defense.
Gonzalez and veteran Carlton Davis III will continue as the Patriots’ starting cornerbacks, with Marcus Jones serving as the primary slot corner. The 24-year-old has started all 34 regular-season games he has played and recorded four career interceptions, including a key pick in the AFC Championship win over the Denver Broncos.
