Hurricane Lowell devastates Kauai, causing widespread damage and outages
NBC News reported that Hurricane Lowell, a Category 2 storm, left extensive destruction, flooding and power loss for about 80 % of customers on Kauai, while other Hawaiian islands also endured heavy rain and wind, and two people were killed. Earlier in the week, the National Hurricane Center had forecast that the storm would move westward south of the islands before turning north, issuing wind advisories for Oahu, Maui County and the Big Island and projecting Category 3-4 conditions near Kauai. The National Weather Service subsequently placed a hurricane watch on Kauai and a flood watch across the state, and Governor Josh Green declared a state of emergency, ordering school and government office closures on Kauai, Niihau and Oahu.
