Apple introduces A20 Pro chip built on 2nm process for iPhone 18 Pro models
Apple announced the A20 Pro processor, fabricated with 2nm technology, powering the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max and offering higher CPU, GPU and neural engine performance than previous generations.
Apple unveiled its new A20 Pro system-on-chip at the iPhone 18 Pro launch event. The processor is manufactured using a 2nm process and features a six-core CPU with two high-performance cores and four efficiency cores. Apple says the high-performance cores are up to 20% faster than those in the prior generation.
The integrated GPU has been expanded to seven cores, with Apple claiming up to 40% higher graphics throughput and greater memory bandwidth. New neural accelerators within the GPU provide double the FP8 performance of the earlier chip, enabling on-device execution of large language models.
An additional Neural Engine brings the total to 32 cores, delivering twice the compute capability of its predecessor and supporting 8-bit floating-point operations. Apple noted that the chip uses a redesigned silicon package that connects directly to the iPhone’s vapor-chamber cooling system, aiming to improve thermal management and sustain performance.
Apple compared the A20 Pro’s sustained performance to earlier models, stating a 40% increase over the A19 Pro used in the iPhone 17 Pro and double the sustained performance of the A18 Pro found in the iPhone 16 Pro.
