30-Year Treasury Yield Hits Highest Level Since 2007, Raising Debt Sustainability Concerns

The 30-year U.S. Treasury bond yield rose to 5.27% in July, its highest since 2007, prompting analysts to warn about the growing cost of financing large deficits.

The 30-year Treasury bond yield closed at 5.27% on July 31, the highest level since 2007, according to a report from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. The foundation said investors are demanding higher compensation for holding U.S. debt, reflecting concerns that the growth of federal deficits is becoming unsustainable.

The report noted that the Treasury’s plan to double the size of its long-dated security buybacks starting September 9 temporarily lowered yields, but they rebounded the following day as market worries persisted.

"All else equal, as debt increases, bond purchasers demand greater yields which makes it more expensive to borrow," the foundation wrote.

Analysts highlighted a cyclical link between rising debt, higher interest rates and increasing interest costs, a pattern that mirrors conditions before the 2007-2009 financial crisis. They said the pandemic response, sustained inflation above target since 2021 and projected large deficits have pushed borrowing costs back toward historic norms.

The report also linked current geopolitical tensions and tariff policies to the bond market’s strain, noting that the United States could face more than $16 trillion in net interest costs over the next decade if rates continue to rise.

Dr. Robert J. Shapiro, a former under secretary of commerce and economic adviser, told AlterNet that the size of recent deficits has prompted the bond market’s reaction, adding that the United States’ tax burden relative to GDP is lower than that of comparable developed nations, making the current fiscal trajectory “unsustainable.”
