Uber to cut 10% of corporate staff in restructuring effort
Uber announced it will eliminate about 3,300 corporate positions, mainly in management and coordination roles, and will require most employees to work in office three days a week.
Uber said on Wednesday it will lay off roughly 10% of its corporate workforce, amounting to about 3,300 jobs, as part of a broader effort to simplify its organization. The cuts target management and coordination roles, with the company saying it will reduce the number of management layers and broaden the scope of remaining managers.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi explained in an internal memo that the company’s rapid growth over the past five years has added complexity, prompting a need to “remove layers, simplify team structures, and focus our people and investments against the biggest opportunities ahead.” He added that the restructuring aims to create a “leaner organization” that can make faster decisions and allocate capital more efficiently.
"We have reduced roles primarily focused on coordination, and have clarified the remit of the coordination roles that remain," Khosrowshahi wrote.
The memo also outlined a new location strategy, stating that almost all remote employees will be asked to return to the office at least three days a week, leaving less than 1% of the corporate workforce fully remote. Uber previously cut customer-service and HR positions earlier in the year and reduced its customer-service team by 10% in July, citing increased use of AI.
The restructuring follows a trend among technology firms to trim management layers and rely more on AI-driven efficiencies. Uber did not mention AI in its announcement, but the company highlighted examples such as merging delivery-operations teams and consolidating engineering groups to eliminate duplication and improve accountability.
