Kennedy Center ceiling collapse reignites $250 million renovation debate
A section of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' grand foyer ceiling fell on September 2, prompting officials to say the incident provides evidence for accelerating the venue's long-delayed $250 million renovation. The collapse came amid ongoing legal challenges to naming and closure proposals linked to President Donald Trump.
Earlier in September, the Center began dismantling Joel Shapiro's electric-blue stick-figure sculpture "Blue" on its campus, a move the board described as part of the broader renovation and renaming effort overseen by President Trump. The Kennedy Center announced the removal citing conservation concerns, and the foundation that owns the work will decide its next location.
