US stays silent as Britain imposes West Bank settlement sanctions
BBC reported on 9 September that the United States has not publicly condemned Britain’s new sanctions on Israeli settlements, a stance that comes as Israel warned of diplomatic retaliation. Britain announced a ban on imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank on 1 September, with Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband saying the move targets products linked to alleged ethnic cleansing. Earlier reports said the UK was considering sanctions and trade bans on settlement goods.
Israel responded by closing the British consulate in East Jerusalem and suspending joint projects, officials said. Miliband also rejected the chief rabbi’s claim that the sanctions endanger British Jews.
