German police arrest suspect in series of power-grid sabotage attacks
Police in Cologne said they arrested a 48-year-old man suspected of carrying out a series of explosive attacks on electricity substations across several German states after he fled for several days. Police and grid operator 50Hertz reported that several homemade bombs were found and defused at the Turnow/Preilack substation near the Jänschwalde coal-fired power plant, causing brief service interruptions but no injuries.
Authorities later said they were probing the incidents as possible sabotage, including potential foreign involvement, left-wing extremism and terrorism links. RWE also said it discovered launch devices near a transformer station south of Düsseldorf, marking a third suspected grid-sabotage case this week ahead of the Saxony-Anhalt state election.
