Iran fires first electro-optical missiles at U.S. warships, U.S. says intercepted
The New York Post reported that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired electro-optical missiles at U. S. warships near the Strait of Hormuz on 9 September, and U. S. Central Command said the missiles were intercepted, the first known use of the new weapon system. Earlier, on 30 August, U. S.
forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, the first U. S. attack on Iran in more than a month. Tehran vowed retaliation, and the Revolutionary Guard subsequently launched ballistic missiles at U. S. bases in Jordan and other Gulf states. The United States responded with further airstrikes on Iranian sites and the destruction of several Iranian oil tankers linked to the IRGC.
