Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and surrounding areas overnight killed 12 people, including six railway workers, and injured 21, while Ukrainian air defenses shot down the majority of the incoming threats.

Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted most of a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv and nearby towns overnight, but at least 12 people were killed and 21 injured, officials said. The casualties include eight dead in the capital and four in the Kyiv region, among them six employees of Ukrainian Railways whose depot was hit by a ballistic missile.

"Everything was on fire," security guard Mykhailo Kostash described the scene at the railway depot.

"I’ve cried so much. I just don’t feel like doing anything anymore," a railway worker named Halyna told reporters.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said roughly 350 emergency responders were deployed to the affected areas and warned that Russia designs its strikes to maximise civilian harm.

In the suburb of Brovary, four people died and 13 were wounded after a missile struck a residential building. Residents described the explosion as terrifying, with one kindergarten tutor saying it felt like a "monster flying."

Ukraine’s military reported that Russian forces launched ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as 218 drones, about a third of which were jet-powered. Air defenses claimed to have intercepted 199 of these, including five ballistic missiles and 187 drones.

The attacks marked the sixth consecutive day of intensive air-raid alerts in Kyiv, as Russia shifts to near-hourly jet-powered drone strikes, a tactic Kyiv officials say is intended to wear down the population.
