Apple names John Ternus CEO as Tim Cook steps down
Apple confirmed on 5 September that John Ternus had taken over as chief executive on 1 September, succeeding Tim Cook, who transitioned to the role of executive chairman. The transition follows Cook’s 15-year tenure during which Apple launched AirPods, generating roughly $10-12 billion in revenue.
The leadership change was first announced in early August, with Cook stating he would step down after a decade-and-a-half at the helm and Ternus, the senior vice president of hardware engineering, named as his successor. Analysts noted the move comes as Apple confronts rising component costs, memory shortages and intensifying competition in artificial-intelligence, and aims to bolster its AI initiatives and supply-chain resilience.
