Lions GM Brad Holmes outlines roster decisions and future plans after 2026 cuts
General manager Brad Holmes discussed the Lions' wide receiver depth, injured-reserve move for Isiah Pacheco, offensive line competition, and the team's focus on pass rush and retaining key players.
Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes and assistant general manager Ray Agnew addressed media questions following the finalization of the 2026 53-man roster. Holmes said the team kept only four wide receivers on the active roster, acknowledging that the number is "a little light" but noting the variety of skill sets in the group. He highlighted practice-squad receiver Tom Kennedy as a potential promotion, especially for punt-return duties, and explained that the release of Greg Dortch resulted from intense competition during the offseason.
Holmes confirmed that backup running back Isiah Pacheco had been placed on injured reserve after a back injury, projecting that the team hopes to see him return later in the season. He said the timing of the move was based on the medical information available at the time.
Regarding the offensive line, Holmes expressed satisfaction with the progress of rookie right tackle Blake Miller and indicated that left guard Christian Mahogany remains a starter while Ben Bartch continues to earn playing time through recent practices and a preseason game.
The GM reiterated the organization’s intention to retain tight end Sam LaPorta and safety Brian Branch on long-term contracts, despite recent injuries that have delayed negotiations.
Holmes emphasized that improving the pass rush was a primary offseason objective, citing acquisitions such as defensive end DJ Wonnum, second-round pick Derrick Moore, and undrafted free agent Eric O’Neill, whom he described as a high-motor, instinctive player who fits the team’s culture.
