Peloton reacts with sorrow as Tadej Pogačar withdraws from Vuelta
Riders slowed the race after Pogačar crashed and later withdrew, prompting widespread disappointment and concern among competitors.
The Vuelta a España peloton halted its pace after news spread that race leader Tadej Pogačar had crashed, allowing him an opportunity to rejoin before he ultimately withdrew. Riders continued to process the incident after crossing the finish line, with Pogačar’s seven teammates boarding the team bus.
Stage winner Bryan Coquard, who claimed his first Grand Tour sprint victory at age 34, said he was happy about his win but also “very disappointed for Pogi” and expressed support for the Slovenian rider’s recovery. He noted that the crash occurred on a fast, straight section of road as the peloton approached a crucial climb.
Larry Warbasse described hearing the crash and seeing the peloton slow, adding that the incident “will totally change the dynamic of the race” and that the group felt “a bit sad” for Pogačar. He said the withdrawal opens the race to new contenders but emphasized concern for the rider’s health ahead of upcoming World Championships.
