Serbian Leaders Announce State Funeral for Ratko Mladic Amid Bosnian Condemnation
Serbian and Republika Srpska officials announced on 1 September that a state funeral would be held for Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb commander who died in a Hague prison hospital, a decision condemned by Bosnian officials as glorifying a convicted genocide perpetrator. Mladic, 84, died on 25 August in the Netherlands while serving a life sentence imposed by the United Nations-backed International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals for his role in the 1992-95 Bosnian war. His death prompted an inquiry by the tribunal and sparked criticism from Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who blamed the court for denying an early-release request.
