Vikings retain rookie QB J.J. McCarthy on roster
Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley confirmed on September 2 that rookie quarterback J. J. McCarthy will remain on Minnesota’s roster as he continues his development behind starters Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz. Earlier, Teasley had indicated that McCarthy was expected to be on the Week 1 roster.
He was subsequently included in the Vikings’ initial 53-man roster. Prior to that, the rookie missed the preseason finale with an ankle injury, leaving the backup competition unresolved. Initially, McCarthy lost the starting quarterback competition and began sharing second-string duties with veteran Carson Wentz, putting his roster spot in doubt.
