Trump urges Canadian firms to shift operations to U.S. amid tariff dispute
President Donald Trump on 30 August urged Canadian companies that do business in the United States to move their headquarters and production to America, saying the measure was necessary as both nations imposed new tariffs and trade tensions rose. Earlier, on 27 August, Trump had used social media to accuse Canada of unfair trade practices, praised the tariffs as beneficial to the auto sector, and called for firms operating in the U. S.
to relocate south of the border. The proposed 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian imports drew opposition from Michigan voters, local officials and business groups, while Republican senators in swing states and members of Congress voiced concerns that the policy could hurt cost-of-living for voters and impact ranchers ahead of the 2024 midterm elections. Callers to a C-SPAN program also expressed strong opposition to the tariffs and to Trump’s foreign-policy actions.
