Norwegian King Harald's health declines, prompting royal cancellations
Norway's 89-year-old King Harald was reported to be in a deteriorating condition, leading the queen and Crown Prince Haakon to cancel public duties.
Oslo's royal palace said King Harald's health has worsened, describing his condition as "very serious" and prompting the queen and Crown Prince Haakon to call off scheduled engagements. The 89-year-old monarch, who suffers from hemolytic anemia, has been on sick leave for several weeks and was admitted to the National Hospital earlier this month after a bacterial blood infection that had previously stabilized. Crown Prince Haakon continues to serve as regent while the king remains hospitalized. Harald, who ascended the throne in 1991, has experienced multiple hospital stays in recent years.
"The king's condition has deteriorated," a palace spokesperson said.
The royal family has not provided a timeline for the king's recovery.
