Family says justice denied after former deputy's death in prison
On 25 August, the relatives of Sonya Massey said the death of former Sangamon County deputy Sean Grayson, who was serving a 20-year sentence for her 2024 killing, leaves them without the justice they sought. Grayson died in prison on 23 August at age 32 after being diagnosed with stage-three colon cancer that had spread to his liver and lungs.
He had been convicted of second-degree murder in 2024 for the fatal shooting of Massey. The death, reported earlier, highlighted the severe illness that led to his demise while he was incarcerated in Illinois.
