Hawk Fire Expands to 15,000 Acres, Forces Tens of Thousands to Evacuate
The Reno Gazette Journal reported that the human-caused Hawk Fire burned more than 15,000 acres, destroyed 32 homes and forced mandatory evacuations for about 42,000 residents in northwest Reno, with containment at 27% on. Earlier, the BBC said the blaze that started on the outskirts of Reno was expected to remain active for another two days under dry, windy conditions and had already prompted evacuations for roughly 90,000 people. KTVN noted that the fire had zero containment and that strong winds threatened thousands of residents.
According to AP, a state of emergency led to the deployment of National Guard resources and evacuation orders affecting nearly 14,000 residences after the fire had scorched more than 10,500 acres. The Reno Gazette Journal earlier reported expanded mandatory evacuations in neighborhoods such as Somersett and Lemmon Valley as the fire grew beyond 10,000 acres. Initial reports from KTVN indicated the fire had burned about 2,500 acres, prompting evacuation orders north of Somersett and Verdi and a request for additional CAL FIRE resources.
