Five Additional Suspects Arrested in Middlesbrough Wrong-Way Crash Probe

Summary

Cleveland Police have detained five more people, including a teenager, as part of the investigation into the fatal A66 collision that killed seven, among them two police officers.

Cleveland Police announced five further arrests linked to the wrong-way crash on the A66 in Middlesbrough that claimed seven lives, including two police officers. The latest detainees are a 16-year-old boy, an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, all suspected of involvement in an organised crime group. A 55-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of assisting an offender, and a 23-year-old man on suspicion of making threats to kill. All five remain in custody.

The total number of arrests related to the investigation has risen to 17. Earlier, two men were charged – one for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and another for possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs and for possessing criminal property.

The crash occurred at 03:39 BST on Saturday when a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the dual-carriageway collided with a Cleveland Police armed-response vehicle. The collision killed PC Tom Clough, 38, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and five civilians aged between 17 and 23.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct reported that officers had pursued the Passat for almost seven minutes after linking it to prior alleged criminal activity, but the pursuit was halted ten seconds before the crash when the vehicle turned onto the dual carriageway.

Police also noted that two vehicles were observed driving dangerously on the morning of the incident, one a Volvo XC60 reportedly ramming property, and the Passat itself. Both vehicles were fitted with cloned number plates that were identified by automated number-plate recognition technology.

Earlier arrests across Teesside involved nine men and three women, aged 19 to 61, on suspicion of offences ranging from firearm possession to participation in organised crime groups. Two of those individuals have since been charged as part of the ongoing probe.
