SEC to Enforce Court Order, Allowing Schools to Sign Former NFL Players with Fifth-Year Eligibility

The SEC announced it will comply with a court ruling that bars the conference from sanctioning member schools that sign former NFL players who have been granted a fifth year of eligibility, NBC Sports reported. A Louisiana judge issued a temporary restraining order in August that let former college athletes who had signed NFL contracts, including former Ole Miss starters, join the NCAA transfer portal and seek a fifth season, CBS Sports reported. A U. S. 10th Circuit panel subsequently paused a district-court order that would have granted a blanket fifth-year eligibility to the 2022 high-school class, AP News said.

The Big Ten then adopted a rule barring former NFL players from rejoining its football programs, ESPN noted. The NFL also confirmed that any player who returns to college football will be ineligible for the 2026 NFL season, NFL. com reported. The ACC is weighing a comparable policy, Yahoo Sports reported. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry publicly backed LSU’s effort to recruit athletes cleared by the courts, Fox News reported.
