Trump Administration Advances Plans for Kennedy Center Renaming and White House Ballroom Amid Legal Challenges

Court filings reveal ongoing construction at the White House ballroom and a proposal to rename parts of the Kennedy Center after President Trump, while legal disputes over both projects continue.

Washington – New court documents show that work on a private-funded ballroom at the White House and a proposed renaming of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts are proceeding despite ongoing lawsuits.

The Kennedy Center’s board, which includes several Trump allies, voted to restore the president’s name on the building’s façade and to name the surrounding grounds "President Donald J. Trump Plaza" once a fundraising goal of $100 million is met. The changes would not be implemented before Sept. 8, according to the filing. The Justice Department said a protective tarp and scaffolding remain in place for water testing and structural repairs, and noted that marble damage may have occurred during the earlier removal of the name.

In the White House case, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction in March to halt construction of a new ballroom, but the administration has continued underground work under court-issued stays. The Justice Department has asked the Supreme Court to suspend the injunction; if the Court does not act by Friday, the injunction will take effect and construction must stop.

A declaration from Joshua Fisher, director for White House Management and Administration, states that $355 million of a $400 million private fundraising target has been secured. He said a 250-person crew is working around the clock and that the project is 65 % complete, with concrete, steel and limestone components already installed. The declaration projects completion of the façade by April and full construction by August 2028.

"The building will be made of concrete and steel and will be completed by November," Fisher said.

The filing also describes planned features such as reinforced concrete, extensive rebar, steel and aluminum finishes, and a range of security-related installations, including bomb-proof and ballistic-resistant elements.
