Judge hears emergency arguments over Kennedy Center Trump naming
U. S. District Judge Christopher Cooper heard arguments from Rep. Joyce Beatty’s attorneys and Justice Department lawyers on an emergency request to stop the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts from inscribing President Donald J. Trump’s name on its façade.
The dispute follows the Center’s board vote to restore Trump’s name to the front façade, a new plaza and an endowment plaque, and a subsequent status report proposing the changes despite a prior judicial order that only Congress may rename the venue. Rep. Beatty filed emergency motions in federal court, arguing that congressional authority precludes the Center’s plan. The Justice Department warned that the Center could be deemed structurally unsafe and face demolition if the renovation and naming are blocked. The Center has delayed implementation of the naming until after Labor Day while it reviews renovation options.
