Kyle Kirkwood Wins Inaugural IndyCar Freedom 250 in Washington
NPR reported that Florida driver Kyle Kirkwood dominated the inaugural Freedom 250 IndyCar Grand Prix on Washington’s National Mall on August 16, leading most laps to claim victory amid extensive patriotic displays. Earlier, the White House announced that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump would lead a presidential motorcade around the circuit on August 23 as part of the pre-race ceremony, and they attended the race the following day.
Historic-preservation advocates warned that the 250-mile street event could threaten nearby monuments, prompting officials to conduct vibration studies and implement precautions to protect museums such as the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian. NPR noted that the one-time race was largely funded by Team Penske, broadcast live on Fox, and drew up to 140,000 spectators.
