Apple tests camera-enabled AirPods designed for visual AI assistance

Resumen

Leaked footage suggests Apple’s upcoming AirPods will include low-resolution cameras that feed visual data to Siri, but they will not record photos or video.

Apple is reportedly preparing a new version of its AirPods that incorporates tiny cameras intended to provide visual input for the Siri digital assistant. The feature was identified in a video captured from Apple’s macOS 26.7 release candidate, showing a user holding a book while speaking to Siri. An accompanying audio cue states, “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.”

Technical traces in the code reference a “Hair Detected” warning, indicating the device would alert users if hair blocks the camera. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the cameras are not meant to capture photos or video; they serve only to deliver low-resolution visual information to Siri for contextual assistance.

"The cameras essentially act as eyes for the Siri digital assistant and aren’t designed to take photos or video. These components — located in both the right and left earbuds — allow the device to capture visual information in low resolution," Gurman said.

Apple envisions the capability enabling hands-free queries such as identifying a book, recognizing cooking ingredients, or providing turn-by-turn navigation without pulling out a phone. The company hopes the integration will encourage more natural interaction with its AI services and reduce reliance on screen-based devices.

Analysts note that while the addition could raise privacy concerns, Apple’s design appears to limit recording functionality, aiming to balance new AI features with its longstanding emphasis on user privacy.
