Dunlop CEO says California tire rules lack real-world testing
Dunlop Tires North America chief Darren Thomas criticized California’s newly adopted rolling-resistance tire standards, saying they lack real-world testing and could push consumer prices higher. The California Energy Commission voted unanimously to implement a phased Replacement Tire Efficiency Program, requiring most replacement tires sold in the state to meet low-rolling-resistance limits starting in 2029, with stricter limits slated for 2033.
State regulators said the rules aim to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, while manufacturers including Goodyear, Bridgestone and Michelin warned the measures could raise tire costs for drivers. Governor Gavin Newsom defended the program, asserting it will cut fuel use and save billions for motorists.
