Trump signs order renaming Lake Ontario amid U.S.-Canada tariff clash
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on 27 August that changed the United States’ geographic name for Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” AP News reported. The rename order arrived after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports, a measure that took effect after trade talks collapsed, according to PBS. Canada announced matching retaliatory tariffs on U. S. goods beginning 8 September, Al Jazeera said.
The dispute followed intensive negotiations earlier in August, when U. S. and Canadian officials tried to avert the tariffs before a midnight deadline, CBS reported. Trump had previously floated the lake-renaming idea as a symbolic response to the trade measures, AP News noted, and Canadian officials dismissed the proposal, saying it would not affect the lake’s name in Canada, Business Insider reported.
