Alaska Senate Primary Clears Same-Name Challenger Amid Confusion Claims
On 26 August, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. had met the legal requirements to remain on the U. S. Senate ballot for the state's Class III seat, joining incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and other candidates for the November election.
The decision followed a series of disputes after the all-party primary on 14 August, when former Anchorage mayor Dan A. Sullivan endorsed the incumbent and observers warned that the independent candidate sharing his name could confuse voters. Preliminary results showed Democrat Mary Peltola leading the incumbent with about 48% of the vote. NBC News later projected that Sullivan and Peltola would advance to the general ballot while the same-name challenger faced legal scrutiny. President Donald Trump had earlier alleged that Democrats had engineered the duplicate candidacy, a claim denied by the candidate and the Alaska Democratic Party.
