U.S. Cancels Planned South Korea Amphibious Drills Over Iran Conflict
The United States withdrew from the planned Ssangyong joint amphibious landing exercises with South Korea on 24 August, saying limited troop availability caused by the conflict in Iran forced the cancellation, and officials said they were discussing a possible reschedule. The move followed President Donald Trump’s earlier directive to scale back the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield drills, ordering the exercises to end six days early on 21 August after citing South Korea’s stance on Iran and a desire to encourage North Korean talks. South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung affirmed the alliance’s importance but warned that the reduced training could affect deterrence, while analysts expressed concerns that the cuts might weaken joint readiness.
