Google adds SIM security timeline and expanded cellular attack alerts in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3

The latest Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 update introduces a persistent SIM security log, detailed cipher information and new notifications for a broader range of cellular threats.

Google released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, extending the Mobile Network Security feature first introduced in Android 16. The update adds a SIM security timeline that records modem-detected events such as attempts by a cell tower to read a device’s IMEI or IMSI, with timestamps and the ability to filter by individual SIM cards.

A new SIM security information screen displays the encryption ciphers currently used for calls, SMS, data and emergency services, indicating which protocols are active for the connection. If a particular network generation has not been used, the corresponding cipher entries may be absent.

The beta also includes additional network-notification strings that will warn users of several cellular attacks, including downgrade attacks that force older, less secure protocols, imprisonment attacks that trap the device in connection loops, denial-of-service and jamming attacks, location-tracking exploits, and unauthenticated SMS or emergency alerts.

These changes turn Android’s cellular security warnings from a simple pop-up into a more detailed audit log, giving users greater visibility into potential modem-level surveillance.
