FDA upgrades Texas egg recall to highest-risk Class I
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration classified a recall of about 1. 6 million eggs produced in Texas as a Class I incident, the agency’s highest-risk level, because of Salmonella contamination concerns.
Earlier, the agency had raised other egg recalls to Class I after a salmonella outbreak sickened 98 people in 17 states, including a recall of over 1. 5 million cartons reported by federal officials. Initial reports described the outbreak affecting nearly 100 individuals and prompting the agency to deem the risk of serious health consequences reasonable.
