Indiana floods continue as rivers crest, evacuations and rescues persist
IndyStar reported that heavy rain on August 17 caused the White and Wabash Rivers to crest, prompting evacuations, the closure of more than 30 roads and ongoing rescue operations across Morgan, Hamilton and other Indiana counties. Earlier, indystar. com described historic flooding that pushed river levels to record highs, leading officials in Hamilton County and neighboring jurisdictions to declare emergencies, urge residents to stay off roads and coordinate voluntary evacuations, including the rescue of a two-year-old child. IndyStar later noted that rising White River levels forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents and a temporary suspension of water-treatment facilities in Indianapolis.
indystar. com added that the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch as volunteers worked to clear flood damage. ABC News reported that seven people died as the floods peaked, but by the time of the latest update water levels were receding.
