FAA launches probe after two tire failures at Chicago O'Hare
The Federal Aviation Administration announced on 18 August that it had opened a preliminary investigation after two separate tire failures occurred on jets landing at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on 13 August. The incidents involved a United Airlines Boeing 737-900 that aborted its takeoff when two right-main-gear tires burst, and an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 that suffered a tire burst on landing, prompting evacuations but no injuries.
United Airlines' flight to Phoenix safely deplaned passengers after the takeoff abort, while the American Airlines flight required the use of airstairs and a temporary runway closure. Both events spurred the FAA’s probe.
