Falcons struggle in preseason debut as Broncos rookie RB impresses
The Atlanta Falcons' first offensive series under quarterback Tua Tagovailoa resulted in a three-and-out, while Denver rookie running back Jonah Coleman posted 24 yards on four carries.
Atlanta quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed three of five passes for 22 yards as the Falcons managed only 24 yards on eight plays over two drives in the opening preseason game against the Denver Broncos. The drive began with a fumble on a second-down shotgun snap and ended with a punt after five plays. Tagovailoa was limited to a reduced set of receivers, with wideout Drake London appearing for just two snaps and running back Bijan Robinson not participating. Denver’s defense pressured Tagovailoa on 60% of his dropbacks.
The Broncos responded with a 40-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Courtland Sutton on the opening drive. Defensive backs Riley Moss and Jahdae Barron each recorded interceptions later in the game. Rookie running back Jonah Coleman, a fourth-round pick from Washington, carried the ball four times for 24 yards, averaging six yards per carry and showcasing vision and power on a 13-yard run.
In a separate preseason matchup, New York Jets rookie defensive end David Bailey, the No. 2 overall draft pick, recorded one pressure and assisted on a tackle during eight snaps. He worked alongside fellow pass-rusher Will McDonald IV, who posted a sack on the Buccaneers’ first drive.
Both teams used the games to evaluate players ahead of the regular season, with coaches noting the need for further assessment of the Falcons’ quarterback competition and the potential role of Coleman in Denver’s rushing attack.
