Tropical Storm Moke nears Hawaii as island recovers from Hurricane Lala
The National Hurricane Center warned on 22 August that Tropical Storm Moke would move a few hundred miles south of Hawaii's Big Island, delivering 5-10 inches of rain, strong gusts and flood watches for the area. The storm follows a week-long ordeal that began on 12 August when the agency first classified a low-pressure system as Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C, which later intensified into Tropical Storm Lala and then into a Category 1 hurricane.
Lala brought heavy rain, hurricane-force gusts and dangerous surf, prompting hurricane warnings for the Big Island. Officials said the hurricane caused one death, left more than 250,000 customers without power, triggered flash-flood emergencies, forced evacuations and damaged bridges, and a subsequent mudslide destroyed about a dozen homes on the island, according to CBS.
